What did we do?
What's been bothering them?
SmartWithFood's premise is simple and bold, they want to become the gold standard in digital food guidance. That means helping people make better food choices based on their needs and wants, keeping things fresh with tailored recipes, offering professional coaching, and generally making the whole process as convenient as possible. Because we all know eating healthy can be quite the hassle, especially for the uninitiated. A different kind of superfood or cancerous ingredient gets the headlines in the news almost every week. And then there's the idea in the back of people's minds that healthy ingredients are supposedly more expensive. So where to even begin?
How did we fix it?
With that in mind, a native application for iOS and Android seemed to be the best, and only true fit for this project. Essentially, there are five key components to the platform. First, educating people about healthy eating habits and inspiring them. Second, letting people plan their meals on a per week basis and allow for recipes to be automatically adjusted to the user's needs. Third, converting said recipes to concrete shopping lists compatible with Colruyt stores. Next, providing a robust, in-app product barcode scanner so that users can get the detailed product information they're after more easily. And finally, offering professional in-app guidance from certified dieticians, creating custom meal plans together to help users achieve their goals.
What are the results?
At the time of writing, the SmartWithFood app has well over 10,000 concurrent users. The North Star metrics used are the number of weekly meal plans that get added to people's shopping lists, as well as the number of appointments booked with dieticians. To aid with visualizing the data, our team has also set up an entire dashboard using Mixpanel, containing all the necessary success metrics and KPIs.
What did the process look like?
Given the scope of the project, we dedicated one design sprint to validating the SmartWithFood platform as a whole, and another to verify the viability of the food coaching functionalities. To validate any technical assumptions about the project before kicking off development, we inserted a prototyping sprint. That gave us the peace of mind needed to start our cross-platform development of the app. Over the course of ten execution sprints, designs and features were carefully implemented in close collaboration with the SmartWithFood team, to gear up this project for launch.
Here’s what the final product can do!
Let's take a quick look at what the core features of the SmartWithFood application look like.

A personalized experience from start to finish.
During the onboarding process, users are asked to input a bunch of information. That way, they can later benefit from personalized suggestions that fit with their profile and goals, and existing recipes will be adapted to their needs accordingly. After all, eating healthy should be easy, not a chore.

Matching user profiles with certified dieticians.
Getting professional help in any kind of scenario can feel daunting, or people perceive their added value to be quite low. But the benefits can be life-changing. Hence the food coaching feature has been made as accessible as possible. Everything from booking appointments to the consultation themselves all happens from inside the application.
